DOJ readying anti-trust probe of Google: report

The Department of Justice has taken steps to launch an antitrust case against Google, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The search giant, owned by Alphabet Inc., has faced increasing scrutiny as regulators around the world have focused on tech companies’ business practices.

The Federal Trade Commission made an antitrust investigation of Google but closed it in 2013 without taking action. The company voluntarily made changes at the time.

But an FTC staff report that was released years later showed agency staff had urged commissioners to bring a lawsuit against Google. That never happened.

The FTC and DOJ recently concluded talks on which agency would lead a new antitrust case. Google didn’t respond to the Journal’s request for comment.
