Body Of 8-Year-Old Kennedy Family Member Recovered From Bay

MARYLAND — Five days after he went missing in the Chesapeake Bay, 8-year-old Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean’s body has been found. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police report that the boy’s body was discovered about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, an estimated 2,000 feet away from where the body of his mom, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, was found Monday.

The two were submerged about 25 feet at a spot 2.5 miles away from the home of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, where the family had gone to self-quarantine. Maeve McKean is the daughter of the former lieutenant governor and the granddaughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. McKean and her husband, David, have two other children, Gabriella and Toby.

The mother and son were playing kickball near a cove at the family’s property when the ball went into the water. They hopped into the canoe and tried to retrieve it. Neither one was wearing a life jacket.

Maeve McKean, 40, and her son were last seen Friday afternoon roughly 10 miles south of Annapolis near Herring Bay. Their overturned canoe was recovered Friday night. Coast Guard personnel searched a combined total of 3,658 square miles over air, sea, and land over 26 hours.

“Maeve … was my everything,” her husband shared on Facebook. “She was my best friend and my soulmate. …She was the brightest light I have ever known.”

Maeve McKean was the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, the former U.S. attorney general and New York senator, and the grandniece of former president John F. Kennedy.
