Auggies 33, St. Olaf 12

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Augsburg College wrestling team used three bonus-point victories to score a 33-12 victory over St. Olaf College in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon at St. Olaf’s Skoglund Center.

Augsburg, the No. 2-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, improved to 3-0 with the dual victory, while St. Olaf dropped to 1-3.

Augsburg used a young lineup in Sunday’s dual, with four first-years among the 10 competitors. Augsburg also took advantage of three straight forfeits in the lower weight classes by the Oles, giving the Auggies 18 team points.

Austin Boniface (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) claimed the lone pin of the match, with a 2:32 fall over Alex Evan in the final bout of the match at 165 pounds.

Matt Hechsel (JR, Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 2 nationally at 197, improved to 14-2 on the season with a 16-0, technical-fall victory over Robert Caulfield, his first technical-fall win of the season. Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho), ranked No. 8 nationally at 157, improved to 13-5 with an 11-1, major-decision win over Adam Woitalla.

St. Olaf’s James Roach, ranked No. 5 nationally at 174, opened the match with a 7-4 win, one of four bout victories for the Oles.

Augsburg returns to action this weekend at the NWCA Division III National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa, next Saturday and Sunday (1/11-12). The Augsburg White Team (junior varsity) will compete at the Ridgewater College Open in Willmar, Minn., next Saturday at 10 a.m.
