‘That’s him at his best’ – Liverpool legend draws Gerrard comparison to transfer target Bellingham

Jamie Carragher has likened Liverpool transfer target, Jude Bellingham, to Steven Gerrard and explained what his best role is with England.

Bellingham has garnered plenty of praise since switching over to Borussia Dortmund in 2020. The 19-year-old has made over 100 appearances for the German club and is one of the highest-valued players in the world.

Pep Guardiola was recently singing the praises of the English youngster and claimed he has the “whole package.”

Carragher believes that Bellingham should be central to England’s plans in Qatar.

The pundit explained (via Sky Sports): “He’s a different type of player. He takes you back to a Steven Gerrard type of player, who’s going to go forward and supplement the attack, creating chances and scoring goals.

“What he makes you think about is England playing 4-3-3 a lot more than three at the back. When England play three at the back, they play two sitting midfield players and I don’t think that’s his game.

“It’s almost Declan Rice and one other and Jude Bellingham is at that stage where he has to play. Certainly his performances over the last few internationals, in the Nations League, deserve that.”

The 19-year-old can play in a variety of positions, but Carragher believes he is best utilised further up the pitch.

Across his 151 professional appearances, Bellingham has scored 22 goals and provided plenty of assists.

Carragher adds: “He’s more of an attacking midfield player than a sitting midfield player. Could he play central midfield? Of course he could.

“And if you’re playing that back three, Bellingham can go forward and you’ve still got the back-three defence, plus Declan Rice – four players behind the ball – and maybe one of the wing-backs as well.

“But in an ideal world, how he plays for Borussia Dortmund is in a 4-3-3 and he’s one of the attacking No8s. That’s him at his best.”

It’s not long now until Southgate will have to make his final call on his England squad ahead of the tournament.

Bellingham is a certainty to make it, but his role within the England set-up is still up for debate.

Since making his England debut in 2020, Bellingham has made a total of 17 appearances for England.

Liverpool are continuing to monitor Bellingham, but they are not alone in their interest. The likes of Man United, Chelsea and Real Madrid amongst others have also been linked with a move for him.

Time will tell on Bellingham’s next move, but he is certainly one of the best talents England currently has to offer.
