Roommate Arrested After Minnesota Woman Killed In Netherlands

NETHERLANDS — A Twin Cities woman is dead after she was stabbed by her roommate in the Netherlands Wednesday, police there say. Sarah Papenheim, 21, was attending Erasmus University in Rotterdam. The attack happened in her off-campus apartment.

Witnesses heard screams from her room before the stabbing, according to authorities. Police said the 23-year-old Dutch man she was living with was arrested after trying to flee.

The suspect fled the apartment building on a train. He was apprehended 65 miles away carrying a suitcase and cello, police told the Washington Post.

Authorities have not revealed a motive in Papenheim’s death. Donee Odegard, the woman’s mother, said the roommate was mentally unstable and becoming more angry.

“He’d have highs and lows and she noticed that and I told her she needed to get out of there because something ain’t right,” Odegard told FOX 9.

Odegard has lost a child before. Papenheim’s brother took his own life three years ago. That prompted Papenheim to study psychology with an emphasis on suicide in college.

“My only two kids, and I’ve lost them both,” Donee Odegar told the Star Tribune.

Papenheim was planning to come home for Christmas. Back in Minnesota, she was a rising star in the Twin Cities music scene. The drummer was scheduled to play at the Schooner Tavern in Minneapolis next week.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Papenheim’s family. As of Friday morning, more than $23,000 has been raised.

Joyann Parker, who established the page, wrote that it will be very expensive to bring the body home, “not to mention any funeral and burial costs involved.”

“Sarah was a beautiful, vibrant young woman and a talented musician with a smile that could light up a room,” Parker wrote.

“She played with some of the best musicians on the scene in the Twin Cities and had many close relationships with them. Her presence is irreplaceable. Sarah’s family has already been through this once with the loss of her brother Josh only 3 years ago.”
