Iowa Trip Awaits SJU Saturday
The Johnnie wrestling team returns to the road for the Luther Invitational this Saturday, Nov. 14. The tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Decorah, Iowa.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s competed at the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Open last Saturday (Nov. 7). Senior John Wells (Janesville, Wis./Milton) led the Johnnies with a 4-3 record and a sixth-place finish at 125 pounds. Only one of his three losses on the day was to a Division III opponent, Concordia-Moorhead’s Jakob Stageberg, by a 5-4 decision in the fifth-place match. Junior Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) posted a 3-2 record at 165 pounds and five other Johnnies recorded two wins on the day.
WHO WILL BE THERE: In addition to SJU and No. 3 Luther, other schools expected to have wrestlers at Saturday’s tournament include Benedictine (Ill.), Buena Vista (Iowa), No. 6 Coe (Iowa), Cornell (Iowa), Dubuque (Iowa), NAIA Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.), Iowa Lakes C.C., Itasca C.C., Knox (Ill.), Loras (Iowa), Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.), Division II MSU-Mankato, North Central (Ill.), North Iowa Area C.C., Rochester Community & Technical College, Simpson (Iowa), Division II Upper Iowa, No. 1 Wartburg (Iowa), NAIA William Penn (Iowa), No. 13 Wisconsin-La Crosse and No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
LAST YEAR’S OPEN: Last year’s Luther Open consisted of two sets of brackets, elite and silver. Senior Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) led SJU with three wins at 141 pounds (elite) on the day. He fell by fall to Minnesota’s Thomas Thorn in his match of the day before rattling off three straight wins, including a pin of the Gophers’ Josh Shupe. He fell to Upper Iowa’s Matt Paulus, 11-5, in the fifth round of the consolation bracket. Evan Guffey ’15 posted a 2-2 record at 141 pounds (elite), while junior Adam Sutlief (Browerville, Minn.) went 2-2 at 149 pounds (silver). Guffey fell to Shupe by a close 3-2 score in his first-round match and also fell to Paulus.
