Yakutsk has seen minus 60 degrees too

According to a BBC report, Yakutsk has seen temperatures dipping as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. Located 5,000 km (3,100 miles) east of Moscow on the permafrost of the Russian Far East, residents of the mining city often see the thermometer regularly drop well below minus 40.

“You can’t fight it. You either adjust and dress accordingly or you suffer,” said Anastasia Gruzdeva, who was outdoors in two scarves, two pairs of gloves and multiple hats and hoods, as per Reuters.

“You don’t really feel the cold in the city. Or maybe it’s just the brain prepares you for it, and tells you everything is normal,” she added in the city shrouded by icy mist.

Although they are accustomed to subzero weather, residents of the isolated area are taking additional steps to stay warm because January is the coldest month in the region.

Another resident, Nurgusun Starostina, who sells frozen fish at a market without the need for a fridge or freezer, said there were no special secrets to deal with the cold.

“Just dress warmly,” she said. “In layers, like a cabbage!”

Cold wave phenomenon

A cold wave (known in some regions as a cold snap, cold spell or Arctic Snap) is a weather phenomenon that is distinguished by a cooling of the air.

Specifically, as used by the U.S. National Weather Service, a cold wave is a rapid fall in temperature within a 24-hour period requiring substantially increased protection to agriculture, industry, commerce, and social activities.

The precise criteria for a cold wave are the rate at which the temperature falls, and the minimum to which it falls. This minimum temperature is dependent on the geographical region and time of year.
