Stormy Monday: Forecasters Say 12+ Inches Of Snow Are Coming To NH

GRAY, ME — Forecasters at the National Weather Service issued a “winter storm watch” on Saturday warning of a major snowstorm, with up to a foot of snow possible, coming to the state beginning Monday night.

“Rapidly strengthening low pressure will approach southern New England Monday night, with snow overspreading the area through Tuesday morning,” the alert said. “Greatest snowfall will likely fall at higher terrain across the Monadnock, Sunapee, and White Mountains. At lower elevations, snow may be heavy and wet, resulting in possible snow load impacts.”

A gusty northeast to north winds Tuesday could accentuate power outage risk, the alert stated.

“Heavy wet snow could cause weighted tree limbs of conifers and leafed trees, leading to snapped branches and downed trees,” the alert said. “Widespread to numerous power outages possible.”

The alert was for the entire state, from 8 p.m. on Monday until 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Accumulations, it said, could be greater than 12 inches, with wind gusts as high as 35 mph.

AccuWeather.com, however, said the strong nor’easter could bring much more snow than expected.

Parts of New Hampshire, on the company’s latest map, showed most of the state receiving 12 to 18 inches of snow, with a StormMax warning of up to 24 inches in some spots. The area on its map showed 12 to 18 running from the White Mountains and Lakes Region, down to Keene, over to Salem, and back up to eastern Merrimack County.

Peak wind gusts were also predicted to be higher by AccuWeather.com — between 40 and 60 mph for most of New Hampshire.

Widespread power outages were expected on the Seacoast, with regionalized or localized outages expected in the rest of the state.
