When it comes to top run scorers in ODIs, Virat Kohli sits right up there. The 34-year-old tops the charts among active players while on the overall list, he is in the top five. Now, India’s most prolific run-scorer in the last decade is closing in on another milestone.
Kohli currently has 12,844 runs in the fifty-over format. It means he needs another 156 to breach the 13,000-run mark. The right-hander will become only the fifth player ever to achieve the feat. Whenever he does it, he will be on an elite list with an esteemed company.

Directly above him in 4th place is Sanath Jayasuriya with 13,430 runs. The Matara Mauler was known to wreak havoc on the best of bowling attacks. Add to that his 300-plus wickets and exceptional fielding skills, one had the total package.
In 3rd position comes Ricky Ponting, the man who led Australia to 2 consecutive World Cup titles and was part of 3 World Cup-winning sides. Ponting has scored 13,704 runs and was also known as one of the best fielders in the world.
No. 2 belongs to Sri Lanka’s run machine Kumar Sangakkara. 14,234 runs make him one of 2 players to be in the 14,000-run club. In time no doubt Kohli can go past him too. When one considers Sangakkara’s numbers as a keeper as well, it makes him the best keeper-batter in ODIs without a doubt.
The top spot of course is held by the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. The man has 18,426 runs and holds records for most ODI appearances, 100s, fifties and runs. It will take some getting for Kohli to go past him.
So it’s an elite list indeed and Kohli should be able to climb it in time and at least make it to 2nd spot. Time too is a factor as he is expected to be around for 4 years max. But for the moment, let him pass the immediate milestone and become one with past legends of the game.
