Trump threatens Iran with ‘obliteration’ after leader’s barb

Apparently stung by the Iranian president’s barb that his White House was “mentally retarded,” an angry President Trump on Tuesday again threatened the country with “obliteration.”

“Iran’s very ignorant and insulting statement, put out today, only shows that they do not understand reality. Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas, overwhelming will mean obliteration. No more John Kerry & Obama!” the commander-in-chief wrote, referring to two of the architects of the Iranian nuke deal that he pulled the US out of.

In a televised address earlier Tuesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said sanctions against the country’s leaders were meaningless because the cleric had no assets abroad, before insulting Team Trump.

“The White House actions mean it is mentally retarded. Tehran’s strategic patience does not mean we have fear,” a defiant Rouhani said.

Trump, in another of a series of tweets slamming the Islamic Republic, asserted that Iran’s leaders don’t know the meaning of the word “nice.”

“Iran leadership doesn’t understand the words ‘nice’ or ‘compassion,’ they never have. Sadly, the thing they do understand is Strength and Power, and the USA is by far the most powerful Military Force in the world, with 1.5 Trillion Dollars invested over the last two years alone,” he boasted.

He then blamed Iran’s leadership for betraying their own citizens, who are suffering as a result of tough US sanctions that Trump has slapped on the regime, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“The wonderful Iranian people are suffering, and for no reason at all. Their leadership spends all of its money on Terror, and little on anything else. The US has not forgotten Iran’s use of IED’s & EFP’s (bombs), which killed 2000 Americans, and wounded many more,” Trump continued.

The Pentagon said earlier this year that 603 US troops in Iraq were killed by Iranian-backed militias, though it was unclear how many were killed by improvised explosive devices or other explosives, according to the Military Times.

It was also unclear where the president’s figure of 2,000 came from.

The deaths were blamed on proxies sponsored by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — Iran’s elite military force — which the US has deemed a terrorist organization.

“During Operation Iraqi Freedom, DoD assessed that at least 603 US personnel deaths in Iraq were the result of Iran-backed militants,” Navy Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, told the website in April.

Also Tuesday, Iran’s supreme leader and foreign minister said the new sanctions Trump imposed Monday shut the door on diplomacy, and blamed the US for abandoning the only path to peace just days after the two foes came within minutes of conflict.

The sanctions came after Iran shot down a US drone last week and Trump called off a retaliatory airstrike, which would have been the first time the US had bombed Iran in decades of hostility between them.
