The Forward hires NY Times digital guru as editor-in-chief
The Forward, the storied 121-year-old Jewish publication that has been beset by losses and staff turmoil, raided the New York Times Tuesday to hire digital guru Jodi Rudoren as its new editor-in-chief.
Rudoren, 48, is currently associate managing editor at the Times in charge of audience strategy.
Her appointment ends a search that began in January when the Forward (formerly the Jewish Daily Forward) axed 30 percent of its staff, including then Editor-in-Chief Jane Eisner and many of her top lieutenants. The last monthly print edition shipped in March as The Forward went fully digital.
“This is a critical moment for local and identity-based journalism and a crucial moment in the American Jewish story,” Rudoren said.
Losses have gone from $7 million in 2016 to $3.7 million in 2018, Rachel Fishman Feddersen, CEO and publisher, told Media Ink. “This year, we’ll lose under $3 million,” she said.
The publication — owned by The Forward Association, a not-for-profit — recently received the largest single grant in its history of $500,000 from Craig Newmark Philanthropies. “We have sustainability within our sites,” she said.
