St. Cloud State wins 2017 NWCA DII National Duals Championships

St. Cloud State University returned to the top spot at the NWCA Division II National Duals tournament with a perfect 4-0 record in action on Jan. 5-6. The #1 Huskies (6-0, 1-0 NSIC) clinched the team title at the NWCA Duals with a solid 35-6 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in the championship match on Friday, Jan. 6 in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Huskies opened the day with an impressive 27-9 victory over #5 Wisconsin-Parkside in the semifinals, which was set up by first round wins over San Francisco State (37-11) and Pittsburgh-Johnstown (37-6) on Jan. 5.

This marks the third time that the Huskies have claimed top honors at the NWCA Division II National Duals with first place finishes also coming in 2012 and 2013. In 2016, SCSU placed second at the NWCA Division II National Duals and the Huskies were the two-time defending NCAA Division II national champions.

In action against UW-Parkside, SCSU lost at 125-pounds but then replied with five consecutive victories to seal the victory. UWP picked up a pair of wins at 174 and 184 but SCSU wins at 197 and 285 iced the final decision at 27-9. James Pleski (149) and Austin Goergen (285) both gained falls in the win over UWP.

In the title match against Wheeling Jesuit, the Huskies’ Mike Rhone (133) and Matt Nelson (141) collected a pair of wins to give SCSU an early 6-3 lead in the match. At 157-pounds, Larry Bomstad’s pin gave the Huskies extra points and pushed his team’s lead to 12-6. SCSU closed the door after 157-pounds with five consecutive victories that included another fall for Goergen at 285 and a pin at :39 by SCSU’s Vince Dietz at 197. At 174-pounds, Clayton Jennissen charted a 14-0 major decision and SCSU gained extra points with a 9-0 major decision victory by Uthman Rabiu at 184-pounds.

Goergen was impressive throughout the tournament as he charted four falls and improved his season record to 13-0 with seven falls to his credit.

NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals Results

St. Cloud State will continue its 2016-17 season with a home dual match against Central Missouri on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
