South Dakota State Triangular

Lower weights lift Jacks to two wins

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota State University wrestling team ran its winning streak to seven by winning a pair of duals Friday at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits, 8-5 overall, opened with a 34-12 victory over SIU Edwardsville and closed the evening with a 23-10 win over CSU Bakersfield.

Against SIUE, the Jackrabbits won the first five matches, highlighted by pins from Seth Gross at 141 pounds and 149-pounder Alex Kocer. Ben Gillette took SDSU out to a quick start by scoring an 11-2 major decision over Joe Antonelli in the opening bout of the dual.

Brance Simms and sixth-ranked Cody Pack closed the first half of the dual with decisions at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively.

SIUE got on the board in the 165-pound match as Nate Higgins recorded a victory by injury default over Luke Zilverberg.

David Kocer and Nate Rotert each tallied pins for the Jackrabbits’ last two victories in the dual, giving SDSU four wins by fall.

In the nitecap against CSU Bakersfield, the Jackrabbits again won the first five matches — this time all by decision. Gross scored a 4-2 victory over returning national qualifier Ian Nickell in the 141-pound bout, while Pack shut out A.J. Fierro, 6-0.

After reserve Logan Peterson lost by decision at 165 pounds, David Kocer put the Jackrabbits back on track with a 14-0 major decision over the Roadrunners’ Bryan Battisto in the 174-pound match. With the win, Kocer became the first Jackrabbit to reach the 20-win mark this season, improving to 20-9 overall.

Brady Ayers also turned in a major decision victory in the 184-pound match, posting a 13-2 win over Dylan Bollinger.

In a battle between ranked wrestlers, eighth-ranked Reuben Franklin notched a 14-2 major-decision victory over Rotert, who entered the match ranked 14th.

CSU Bakersfield opened the triangular by defeating SIU Edwardsville, 33-6.

The Jackrabbits resume home action Sunday, hosting Air Force in a Big 12 Conference dual. Start time for the Military Appreciation dual is set for 11:30 a.m. at Frost Arena.
