Serena Williams has history in her sights after US Open semifinal win
One step from history. One win from tennis immortality.
As if Serena Williams weren’t already there. But now she’s onto Saturday’s U.S. Open final, with a shot to match Margaret Court’s all-time record of two dozen Grand Slam titles.
She got there with Thursday’s 6-3, 6-1 rout of Elina Svitolina, a straight-set victory that belied how well the fifth-seeded Ukrainian played. Her foe wasn’t all that sorry; Williams was just superb, even showing some rare serve-and-volley game.
Williams just flat-out overwhelmed Svitolina. She had her usual power and moved well enough — constantly a concern since giving birth to daughter Olympia two years ago. But frankly, Svitolina never really tested Williams’ legs, rarely hitting a ball she couldn’t get to.
In front of a star-studded crowd that included Queen Latifa, Spike Lee and Jason Biggs, it’s likely Williams’ training guru, Mackie Shilstone, who was as proud as anyone. He’s trained the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr., and this was an early knockout performance.
Williams broke Svitolina’s very first serve on a nasty return down the line to go up 2-0. She opened the next game with an ace and won on love. But it was the fifth game that typified the match.
After falling behind on her own serve, spotting Svitolina a 40-0 edge and facing triple break point, she roared back to win on a passing shot. Williams went up 4-1 and cruised the rest of the way.
Svitolina seemed off her game. Williams never let up.
“She’s such a good player and two semis in a row … I just wanted to not get off to a slow start and hang in there,” Williams said in an on-court TV interview. Her 101st win at the U.S. Open tied Chris Evert’s mark.
“It’s just impressive, I guess. I don’t think about it, I just come out here and do what I can. To be in any club with Chrissy is awesome.
“This is the biggest stadium for tennis, period, in the whole planet. I think of it that way. If you think of it that way, it’s such an honor. … It’s amazing, I enjoy the opportunity to be out here.”
Now she’s just a win away from tying Court’s all-time mark in majors.
“Her power, her accuracy I think her speed is so much better than it was even a month ago,” Billie Jean King said in a TV interview. “It’ll be great if she won this and went on to Australia and broke it. That’s my prayer.”
