Senator demands NFL and Commish Roger Goodell get tough on domestic violence
Sen. Richard Blumenthal took a shot at the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday, demanding that the league take a tougher stance on players charged with domestic violence.
“The NFL has failed to lead on the issue of domestic violence & sexual assault by its players. These heinous crimes must be taken more seriously with greater oversight & accountability. As the regular season starts, I’m demanding Commissioner Goodell take stronger action,” the Connecticut Democrat wrote on Twitter, adding a letter he sent to the league’s top exec.
Blumenthal had sent an earlier letter to Goodell on the same topic, and followed up Thursday saying the commissioner’s response was lacking.
“I remain deeply concerned that the NFL is continuing its failure to take the incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault among players seriously,” he wrote.

He cited the case of former Kansas City Chiefs player Kareem Hunt, who last year was caught on video shoving and kicking a woman in a hotel.
Hunt was sent packing soon after the video surfaced, but was later picked up by the Cleveland Browns and will serve what the senator called a “mere” eight-game suspension imposed by the league.
Blumenthal then demanded that Goodell take tougher action against players and establish strict policies for offenders.
