Dustin Pedroia’s attempts to rehab his knee might have hit a final snag.

On Monday, the longtime Red Sox second baseman announced at a news conference he’s “not sure” if he’ll ever be able to play baseball again.

The presser came hours after the team moved Pedroia to the 60-day injured list, with the 35-year-old getting into just six games this season due to left knee pain after playing just three games in 2018. Team president Dave Dombrowski said there is no timeframe for Pedroia’s return, calling the second baseman’s leave of absence “indefinite.”

Pedroia has a contract that runs through 2021, with $25 million due to him over the next two seasons.

“I’m at a point right now where I need some time. That’s what my status is,” Pedroia told reporters. “… Some days, I feel fine, and an hour later, walking is tough. If I’m on an hour-to-hour basis of being able to do anything athletically, that’s tough. I think the time will give me the right answer of if I can do this.”

Pedroia, a four-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, plans to return home to Arizona after the team’s weekend series against the Yankees to spend time with his family and determine if his knee will allow him to take the field at Fenway again. He admitted he’s yet to contemplate retirement, though the time off will allow him to evaluate the option.
