Paris Jackson Had Been ‘Struggling for Some Time’ Before Seeking Treatment: Source

Paris Jackson has had a long struggle with her mental health.

“She has been battling depression and is electively seeking help. This isn’t the first time she’s sought professional treatment for her mental health and specifically depression,” a source tells PEOPLE of Jackson, 20, who is currently seeking treatment for her physical and emotional health.

The source went on to explain that the singer and model, who is the daughter of the late Michael Jackson, “has been growing distant from her loved ones.”

“She is still close with her brothers but has been struggling for some time,” the insider adds, referencing the singer and model’s brothers Prince, 21, and Blanket, 16, who now goes by B.G. or Bigi.

On Tuesday, a source close to the star confirmed Jackson recently checked into a treatment facility.

“Yes i’ve taken a break from work and social media and my phone because it can be too much sometimes, and everyone deserves a break, but i am happy and healthy and feeling better than ever!” Jackson wrote on Wednesday, in her first post on Instagram since Dec. 12, alongside a selfie of herself with a dog, in which the top of her face was cropped out.

She went on to reveal that her band, The Sound Flowers, “have some new music we’re stoked to share with y’all!” adding: “hope you guys’ new year started out with lots of love and light and all the things. i’ll be back soon!!”

A source close to Jackson previously told PEOPLE that “after a busy year of work engagements that took her all over the globe, Paris decided that she needed to take some time off to reboot, realign and prioritize her physical and emotional health.”

“There wasn’t some big event that led to her seeking treatment,” another source explained, adding, “This was 100 percent her own decision. No one forced her to get help.“

Jackson, who has been open about her struggles with depression, anxiety and substance abuse in the past, was hospitalized in 2013 after attempting suicide, she previously revealed during an interview with Rolling Stone in 2017.

“I was crazy. I was actually crazy. I was going through a lot of, like teen angst. And I was also dealing with my depression and my anxiety without any help,” Jackson — who ended up seeking treatment at a residential therapy program — told the outlet.

Last April, she also hit back at reports claiming she was out of control. “So apparently people think I’m about to die,” she said, referencing a Page Six report claiming she was headed for a “serious meltdown.”

“My therapist texted me about it laughing though, so that’s good. So I guess to the family members that are talking to all of these news outlets saying they’re worried for me: When is the last time you called me?”
