More Americans think Trump has presidential qualities than 2 years ago: poll

More Americans believe that President Trump has the personality and leadership qualities a president needs to get the job done than he did two years ago — but he remains underwater with the general public overall.

In a poll, 40 percent of Americans think the commander-in-chief has what it takes compared to just 33 percent in 2017, Gallup reported Tuesday.

But while the president’s numbers are climbing, they still lag far behind George W. Bush and Barack Obama at similar points in their presidencies, with about 60 percent saying they had the right traits to be president, according to the poll, which was conducted from April 17 to 30.

Neither Obama nor Bush ever had a rating lower than 49 percent during their presidencies.

Slightly more Republicans, Democrats and independents believe Trump has the character a president should have than they did in July 2017.

And more Americans rate Trump positively for his positions on issues than for his character, with 47 percent saying they agree with him on the issues that matter most to them — a score similar to his two predecessors.

Meanwhile, the latest Real Clear Politics average of presidential approval polls shows that 42.3 percent of US voters approve of the job Trump is doing while 54.1 percent do not — a minus 11.8 percentage-point gap.
