ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Outside of a trip to Cleveland in early June, there hasn’t been a gift-giving ceremony to commemorate CC Sabathia’s superlative career as he moves around big league cities for the final time.

The Indians, for which Sabathia pitched for eight years, gave him a check for charity and that was it until Friday when MLB announced the Yankees’ left-hander will be honored at next week’s All-Star Game in Cleveland.

Alex Cora, the AL’s manager on Tuesday night, contacted Sabathia, a six-time All Star, to see if he would be interested in being part of the festivities.

“He called me a couple of weeks ago and asked me if I wanted to go. I was like, ‘Yeah,’ ’’ Sabathia said before Friday night’s Yankees-Rays game at Tropicana Field. “It is exciting to have the league think it was cool for me to go.’’

Sabathia, 38, said he wasn’t sure what his role will be, but it could include being an honorary coach.

Had the game been played anywhere else, Sabathia said he would have accepted MLB’s invitation. That it’s Cleveland only made it sweeter.

“It is cool it is in Cleveland. I would have went regardless but the fact that it is there makes it easier for everybody to make that decision,’’ said Sabathia, who will start Saturday night after not pitching since June 24 against the Blue Jays because of a weird travel schedule that involved two days off before a pair of games in London last week and a day off afterward. “It’s amazing. Major League Baseball usually doesn’t do things like this. To be the guy they are honoring feels good. This is awesome.’’

MLB will honor CC Sabathia at All-Star festivities in Cleveland

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Outside of a trip to Cleveland…

Sabathia said he is looking forward to being in Cleveland to relax and interact with players he played with and against.

“One last time in a relaxed environment, kind of hang out so it should be fun,’’ said Sabathia, who will join Yankees teammates DJ LeMahieu, Gary Sanchez, Aroldis Chapman and Gleyber Torres in Cleveland.

Sabathia listed the Home Run Derby and the parade as events that make the All-Star Game fun for the players to participate in and watch.

“We are delighted that CC and his family will join us in Cleveland, where his Major League career began. We look forward to celebrating his many accomplishments during our All-Star Game festivities,’’ MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement on Friday.

With 251 wins and 3,052 strikeouts Sabathia is a lock for the Hall of Fame and no doubt MLB is doing this to celebrate one of the best careers by a left-handed pitcher.

“To have MLB recognize my career is a cool thing,’’ said Sabathia, who didn’t have a trip planned during the break. Instead he was going to watch his son, Carston (Little C), play baseball games. “I have plenty of time to travel.’’

As for what is left of his career Sabathia is locked in on helping the Yankees get to October and win a World Series for the first time since 2009, which was Sabathia’s first year with the Yankees.

The next step toward all that is Saturday when he pitches with a dozen days of rest.

“A couple of bullpens,’’ Sabathia said of what he has done while idle. “I feel pretty good and strong going out there [Saturday].’’

Sabathia is 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA in 13 starts this season and said he believes the Yankees, who led the AL East by 7 ½ games over the Rays and were 11 lengths in front of the third-place Red Sox, are in a good spot.

“The team is playing well, that is all we can ask for,’’ Sabathia said of the 56-29 record the Yankees brought into Friday night’s game. “We feel pretty good in the AL East right now, and we want to keep it going. That’s our main goal.’’
