Mavericks Come Up Short Against Western Colorado

MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 15 Minnesota State wrestling team fell to No. 23 Western Colorado, 24-19, Saturday afternoon at Taylor Center.

With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 1-1, while the Mountaineers improve to 2-1 on the year.

The Mavericks fell behind 6-0 after Anthony Heng was pinned in 4:00 by Jason Hanenberg at 141 lbs. An 11-2 major decision win by Kyle Rathman at 149 lbs., closed the deficit to 6-4 after two matches.

At 157 lbs., Cooper Siebrecht defeated Cole Mortensen by an 8-6 decision to give the Mavericks a 7-6 lead. The Mountaineers regained the lead at 9-7 after Michael Thelen secured a 7-4 win over Logan Saltou at 165 lbs.

Jimmy LaConte, who holds the No. 11 rating at 174 lbs., won by pinfall in 5:45 over MSU’s Zach Johnston, who holds the No. 7 ranking at 174 lbs., to increase the WCU lead to 15-7.

Back-to-back big-time wins by MSU allowed the Mavericks to take a 16-15 lead. First, Trevor Turriff defeated Hunter Mullin by a 13-8 decision at 184 lbs. Matthew Blome followed with a pin in 1:46 over Kris Davis at 197 lbs., to give the Mavericks the lead.

At heavyweight, WCU’s Sammy deSeriere won by a 17-2 tech fall over MSU’s Max Villnow to take a 20-16 lead. At 125 lbs., Trenton McManus defeated Colby Duncan by an 8-4 decision to draw within a single point at 20-19, but that’s as close as the Mavericks would get, as 11th-rated Cody Fatzinger came away with an 18-6 major decision win over Cole Gille at 133 lbs.

The Mavericks will now travel to San Francisco to participate in the San Francisco Duals on Friday.
