Mayor with prosthetic leg mocked online over flat shoes
A UK town mayor who has a prosthetic leg says she was viciously mocked online — all because she wore flat shoes to an event.
Stockport mayor Laura Booth, who lost part of her left leg in a car crash, said she was “sad to have received abuse” after forgoing heels, the Independent reported.
The apparently offending footwear was worn to a Monday celebration for a local bakery, which then shared a photo on Facebook of her posing in the laced-up shoes.
“Look at the state of her…. a mayor in trainers,” one Facebook user sniped.
The politician, whose leg is amputated from the knee down, fired back, saying, “Factually, that they’re not trainers, they’re shoes. I’m an amputee so I have to wear flat shoes, I can’t always wear the most flattering footwear.”
Booth explained that the shoes help her carry out her duties as mayor — allowing her to walk around the event instead of having to use a wheelchair.
“As an amputee am just pleased that though limited I do have some mobility,” Booth tweeted. “In all honesty can’t believe my footwear diminishes my ability to carry out the role.”
