Malibu Canyon Road Reopens Five Days After Mudslide
MALIBU, CA — Malibu Canyon Road reopened Monday morning five days after it was blocked by a mudslide, city officials said.
Malibu Canyon Road was shut down in both directions near Piuma Road Wednesday morning. Crews worked to clear 500 cubic yards of mud, rock and debris. After that was cleared, officials had concerns over the hillside’s stability, due to the large amount of water that ran down the hills and into the road, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.
On Sunday, geologists and engineers, along with a drone, assessed if the road was ready to reopen.

The mudslide occurred the same day that another one shut down a portion of Pacific Coast Highway, which reopened later that day. But work to clear debris and ensure the safety of nearby hillsides is ongoing between Latigo Canyon and Corral Canyon roads.
As of Monday morning, two southbound and one northbound lanes remain open on that stretch of PCH, officials said.
