Lonzo Ball ‘excited’ by Lakers, Anthony Davis trade he was waiting for
Lonzo Ball is embracing his new basketball reality.
The point guard was dealt from the Lakers to the Pelicans in the long-awaited Anthony Davis blockbuster earlier this summer, and the 2017 second-overall pick is looking forward to starting over again with another young team in New Orleans.
“I was kind of excited, honestly,” Ball told ESPN of the deal on Saturday. “I kind of figured someone was going to get moved soon enough. I knew Anthony Davis wanted to come bad. Anytime you can get a guy like that, you are going to have to do what you have to do to get him. So I was kind of already just waiting for it, honestly, and I was happy to go with two guys I am comfortable with in B.I. [Brandon Ingram] and JHart [Josh Hart]. I am excited to see what we can do.”
Ball admitted he probably would have been sad had he been traded earlier in his career.
“Just being from L.A., having my whole family here and wanting to be a Laker,” he said. “But being in the league for two years, knowing it’s a business…”
But he is ready for a “fresh start” alongside Zion Williamson in New Orleans.

“Yeah, I’ve been hearing my name for two years now,” Ball said of expecting to be traded. “So it didn’t bother me at all. We were all ready for it.”
Ball, who hugged and chatted with LeBron James during summer league, has been plagued by injuries so far. He’s averaged 10 points, 6.4 assists and 6.2 rebounds over 99 NBA games, never playing more than 52 contests in his two seasons.
He took a much more mature approach to the deal then his father LaVar, who in June said that it will be the “worst move the Lakers ever did in their life.” His son, on the other hand, is looking to make the best of his new life.
