TOWN OF HUNTINGTON, NY — John’s Crazy Socks, a sock business in Farmingdale, was awarded a proclamation by Huntington Councilman Salvatore Ferro in recognition of National Disability Awareness Month, Ferro’s office announced.

Employees from John’s Crazy Socks were presented with proclamations and certificates ahead of the Huntington Town Board meeting on March 14.

The business was co-founded by John Cronin, who has Down syndrome, and his father, Mark X. Cronin.

“I love Huntington, so it made me very happy to receive this honor form the Huntington Town Board,” John Cronin told Patch. “It brings me great joy to share it with my colleagues.”

John’s Crazy Socks is committed to hiring people with differing abilities. The store created 34 jobs — 22 of which are held by someone with a differing ability. This is all part of the ongoing effort to showcase the talent and skills of people with differing abilities, according to the business.

“Employment is a basic human right,” Mark X. Cronin said. “People with differing abilities deserve the ability to earn a job. In hiring, focus on what people can do; not what they cannot do. We know hiring people with differing abilities is not altruism, it is good business.”

Ferro said it gave him great pleasure to recognize Mark and John Cronin, as well as their colleagues from John’s Crazy Socks, during National Disability Awareness Month.

“They have demonstrated the great things people with differing abilities can do when given the opportunity,” Ferro said. “Some of their philanthropic achievements include creating charity awareness socks, raising more than $550,000 for charities and donating 5 percent of all earnings to the Special Olympics. They exemplify the best of society in their mission to spread happiness.”

The business recently was named the world’s “most inspirational social enterprise” by LUXlife Magazine as part of the publication’s annual Style and Apparel Awards.

Cronin is the first person with Down syndrome to win the award.

John’s Crazy Socks is located at 110 Bi County Blvd Suite 120, Farmingdale.
