House Democrats push through $4.5B emergency border aid bill

House Democrats on Tuesday pushed through a $4.5 billion emergency border aid package after a small revolt by the progressive wing of the party threatened to torpedo the legislation.

After last-minute changes to the bill to gain support from left-leaning Democrats, the bill passed along party lines by a vote of 230-195.

The bill earmarks $1 billion in federal funds to shelter and feed migrants who are detained by border patrol in the US.

It provides another $3 billion to fund services for unaccompanied migrant children who cross into the country and are turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Progressives in the House, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, threatened to withhold support from the bill because they feared it would funnel money to agencies that have implemented President Trump’s immigration policies.

“I am not planning on voting as it is,” Rep. Ilhan Omar told the New York Times before the vote. “We have a humanitarian crisis, and what we are trying to do does not match that crisis.”

Both Omar and Ocasio-Cortez voted against the measure Tuesday night, CNN reported.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared confident that she had whipped up enough votes for the bill’s passage prior to the vote on Tuesday evening.

The passage of the bill sets up a fight between the House and the GOP-controlled Senate, who have drawn up a bipartisan measure for humanitarian funding on the border.
