Hinsdale Strays Not Going To Local Shelter

HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale is not taking stray dogs to the Hinsdale Humane Society, but rather to DuPage County Animal Services in Wheaton, an official said Monday.

On July 10, the society notified Hinsdale that it would no longer allow the village to bring animals to its local facility until a contract had been signed and executed, Hinsdale Police Chief Brian King said in an email to Patch.

The prohibition took effect at 5 p.m. Friday, he said.

The contract is set for consideration at the Village Board’s Aug. 13 meeting, the chief said.

“DuPage County Animal Services agreed to hold our unclaimed strays while the Humane Society is off line,” King said in the email.

Society officials couldn’t be reached for comment. The shelter is closed on Mondays.

A few years ago, the shelter moved to a new facility at 21 Salt Creek Lane. Before that, the society was long housed in the village’s building at 22 N. Elm St.

In 2022, the society went public with its “severe financial difficulty.” The group said it cut costs and was running “as lean as possible.”

For 2023, the society reported its operating deficit at $203,000, with expenses at $2 million.
