Fruit Sold at Aldi, Costco and Walmart Is Being Recalled Over Listeria Contamination
Fruit distributor Jac. Vandenberg, Inc. is recalling more than 2,000 cartons of fresh peaches, plums and nectarines because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Friday.
Included in the recall are 1,727 cartons of peaches, 1,207 cartons of nectarines and 365 cartons of plums, which may have come in contact with the bacteria at a packaging facility.

The fruits were sold in 18 states: Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia.

The following retailers stocked the products: Aldi, which sold all three fruits; Costco, which sold only nectarines; Fairway Market, which sold nectarines and peaches; Hannaford, which sold only peaches; Market Basket, which sold nectarines and peaches; and Walmart, which sold nectarines and peaches.
Affected fruits are identifiable based on their PLU sticker. For peaches and nectarines, look for PLU# 4044, 3035, 4378 and a country of origin of Chile.

More specifically, the fruits sold at ALDI come in a 2-pound bag with the brand Rio Duero; look for EAN# 7804650090281, 7804650090298, 7804650090304. Costco’s nectarines come in a 4-pound plastic clamshell with an EAN# 7804650090212 and the brand Rio Duero.
Consumers concerned they purchased an affected product may return it to the store for a full refund.

According to the FDA, listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Common and usually short-term symptoms among healthy individuals include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
