Former basketball player Kenny Anderson is recovering after suffering a stroke over the weekend.

Anderson — who played for nine NBA teams after being selected No. 2 overall in the 1991 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets — was released from the hospital after he had a stroke on Saturday night at his home in Florida, according to The New York Daily News.

Anderson’s speech and eyesight were affected, but both have improved over the course of several days, sports columnist Peter Vecsey reported.

“Wife was on the ball to have recognized stroke symptom early, otherwise hospital might not have been able to [help] Kenny; clot was in [his] leg,” Vecsey wrote on social media.

Fisk University, where Anderson just completed his first season as head basketball coach, tweeted a statement on behalf of the 48-year-old’s family.

“We would like to thank everyone for reaching out on behalf of Kenny,” Anderson’s wife, Natasha, said in the statement. “Our family is extremely grateful for all the prayers and love that we have received over the last few days. We appreciate you continuing to respect our privacy as Kenny heals.”

Anderson is a “legend” in his hometown of New York City, where he was a four-time Parade All-American, Parade’s Player of the Year, and New York’s Mr. Basketball during his time at Archbishop Molloy High School, according to CBS Sports.

While at Georgia Tech University, Anderson helped to lead the team to a Final Four appearance in 1990.

After joining the Nets, Anderson was named an NBA All-Star in 1994. He would go on to spend 14 seasons in the league, which were split between his time on the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trailblazers, Boston Celtics and Seattle Supersonics, among stints with other franchises. He left the NBA in 2005, and played a single season in Lithuania before retiring.

News of the sportsman’s health crisis comes as actor Luke Perry was also rushed to hospital after having a stroke.

The 52-year-old star suffered a stroke early Thursday morning at his home on Sherman Oaks, California.

A rep for the actor told PEOPLE, “Mr. Perry is currently under observation at the hospital.”
