Farmhouse that’s a century older than America is for sale in Ohio

Finding a well-preserved home for sale that was built before the Revolutionary War is a rarity. Finding one in the middle of Ohio — a state founded in 1870, almost 100 years after after the American Revolution began in 1775 — seems downright impossible.

But that’s precisely what’s on the market in Medina, Ohio, a rural community about 30 miles south of Cleveland.

A house built in 1697 — a whopping 322 years ago — just listed for $525,000.

“I initially thought I had misheard the owner when he first called me to schedule an interview for marketing the property,” Berkshire Hathaway realtor Catherine Haller, who is representing the home, told Cleveland.com. “I was taking notes during our conversation, and had written down 1697 as the year it was built, and just assumed that had to be a mistake. But it wasn’t.”

How did such an old home come to rest in a small Ohio town with a population of about 26,000?

It “was moved to its current location in the 1970s from Massachusetts, where it originally stood,” according to the Berkshire Hathaway listing.

It was re-assembled “board by board on its current foundation” and has been modernized and maintained ever since.

While the median value of a house in the area is $185,000, according to financial news site 24/7 Wall St., this historic abode is seeking three times that amount.

Locals are skeptical that it will sell for that asking price, but the oddity has certainly garnered some attention. It was reportedly one of the most-searched homes on Realtor.com last week.

The house, located at 2244 Remsen Road, has been expanded to 2,600 square feet with some additions, but the four-bedroom, two-bathroom abode retains many of its 17th-century details.

It has five fireplaces, wide-plank flooring, exposed beams, wood detailing and numerous rooms for entertaining. There’s also a large barn-like structure that serves as a garage and studio.

Obviously, updates have been made, such as adding newer kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures and installing central air conditioning.

The wood structure, now painted a trendy black, sits on more than 13 acres of land with sprawling views of the countryside.
