Far-left activists emboldened by Tiffany Cab\u00e1n’s upset win
Emboldened lefty activists are threatening Democratic primary challenges against veteran incumbents in next year’s state legislative races in the wake of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s protege Tiffany Caban’s upset victory in the Queens district attorney’s race.
Working Families Party organizer Ava Benezra warned Assembly Democrats to watch their backs if they fail to pass progressive policies left undone during the 2019 legislative session.
“Hi @NYSA_Majority? There are no safe seats. Next year you will legalize marijuana, fully fund our public schools, and pass public financing. Or you will loose [sic],” Benezra tweeted after insurgent Caban’s victory over the establishment-backed candidate, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.
Democrats now run the state house — the governorship and both houses of the Legislature — after winning control of the Senate last fall.

Although progressives won a slew of legislative victories this year — after being stymied for nearly half a century owing to split control between the GOP, which previously controlled the state Senate, and Democrats running the Assembly — they heaped ire on the shoulders of Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) and other veteran Democrats for allegedly failing to approve pet issues.
Democrats decriminalized certain marijuana offenses, but didn’t fully legalize the substance. They also passed a bill okaying a commission to study the impact of a statewide taxpayer-funded campaign finance system, much to the dismay of liberals seeking a new law.
Results in several Assembly districts in western Queens showed that Democratic voters went overwhelmingly for Cabán over Katz. Ocasio-Cortez trounced veteran Congressman Joe Crowley in the same districts last year in her own upset victory.
In District 37 covering Long Island City and Sunnyside, represented by Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, Cabán routed Katz 4-1.
Cabán also defeated Katz better than 2-1 in Michael DenDekker’s 34th Assembly District representing Jackson Heights.
She also easily carried Assemblyman Michael Miller’s 38th District covering Woodhaven.
Cabán received a total of 33,814 votes compared to Katz’s 32,724, but paper ballots have yet to be counted.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said low turnout contributed to Cabán’s victory.
