Dutch teen Noa Pothoven starved herself to death with parents’ consent

The Dutch teen who suffered severe anguish over a childhood rape and sexual assault starved herself to death — with the consent of her parents and doctors.

Noa Pothoven, 17, died Sunday in a hospital bed set up in the living room of her family’s home in Arnhem, Politico Europe reported Wednesday.

Noa’s parents and doctors agreed not to force-feed her or put her into treatment against her will.

It was reported, including in The Post on Wednesday, that she died from state-sanctioned euthanasia, but that is not the case.

Love is letting go: Netherlands teen raped as child chooses to end her life

Noa Pothoven, 17, has been legally euthanized in the Netherlands,…

Noa had sought death by euthanasia from a medical clinic a year ago, without her parents’ knowledge, but was rejected.

“She got depressed more and more, and said, ‘Well, OK, now I press on the button. Now I say I will stop with all treatments,’ ” Paul Bolwerk, who reports for the local newspaper the Gelderlander, told Politico. He said Pothoven’s family attempted to get her electroconvulsive therapy, but it was denied because she was a minor. “During the last months she had undertaken several attempts to commit suicide,” he said.

Pothoven, who asked friends not to try to change her mind, wrote that she suffered from post-traumatic stress and anorexia in the wake of the sex attacks, according to The Sun in London.

The tormented teenager wrote about her sexual assault at age 11 and rape three years later in her autobiography “Winning or Learning.”

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Pothoven defended her choice to end her life. “Love is letting go, in this case,” she said in the post.

“Maybe this comes as a surprise to some, given my posts about hospitalization, but my plan has been there for a long time and is not impulsive,” she said in the post announcing her choice to die in the living room of her home.

The teen explained she was suffering from “unbearable pain” and stated bluntly that “within a maximum of 10 days I will die.”

“After years of battling and fighting, I am drained,” she wrote. “I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was decided to let me go because my suffering is unbearable . . . This is my decision and it is final.”
