Drinking Coke And Pepsi May Improve Sexual Health Of Men, Suggests Recent Study

Most of the studies in the past have asserted that carbonated drinks negatively impact the well-being of humans and are a bane to the upkeep of their health.

But a recent study, conducted by scientists at China’s Northwest Minzu University, has claimed that high doses of carbonated beverages like Coca-Cola and Pepsi may increase testicle size and testosterone levels.

The study comes in as a sharp contrast to the previous research reports that have considered soda consumption as a factor that harms reproductive functions and reduces the quantity and motility of sperm.

Test conducted on male mice over 15 days

The researchers based their study on the tests that were performed on groups of male mice over 15 days.

During the period, one group was fed with only water, while the other groups drank Coca-Cola and Pepsi to varying degrees.

Based on this process, it was discovered that the testes of the mice that consumed only Pepsi or Coca-Cola were “significantly increased on day 15.”

Testis growth, testosterone secretion boosted

“The outcome demonstrated a high dose of Pepsi or Coca-Cola could promote testis growth and development,” the researchers stated.

Additionally, researchers also saw that “the concentrations of serum testosterone in all mice were enhanced after the Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola treatment,” which “indicated that high doses of Pepsi and Coca-Cola could improve testosterone secretion of male mice”.

“In conclusion, drinking Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola could promote testis development, enhance testosterone secretion, increase serum EGF concentrations …. Our findings provided the scientific basis for fully understanding [carbonated beverages] effects and their mechanism on development and reproduction functions of humans, but also benefit to prevent prostate dysfunction and cancer,” the researchers further wrote.

However, the scientists mentioned that more research on the link between soda and fertility should be undertaken.

Previous studies focused on health risks

In a prior study, that contained a survey of 2,500 men, it was indicated that sperm quantity was lowered by 30 per cent when a one-litre carbonated beverage was ingested by the subjects on daily basis.

Research authors of the mice study also focused on the point that health risks such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes are related to the exorbitant intake of carbonated beverages.

Also, they cited the adverse effect of oxidants and additives in such drinks on cell health and sperm mobility.

Study not applicable to female mice

Notably, the reproductive benefits of Coca-Cola and Pepsi do not apply to female mice.

An identical initial experimentation on female mice showed that the two drinks decreased ovarian weight and hindered the growth of oocytes (immature ovum).

They also caused a decline in the pregnancy rate and fetus numbers of female mice, displaying that such consumption may risk their reproductive success.
