Domenica Vacca closes flagship NYC store
Designer Domenica Vacca has found himself in a very unfashionable place: on the curb.
After a months-long legal battle with his landlord in Manhattan, Vacca closed his 3-year-old flagship store at 15 W. 55th St. over the holiday weekend.
A sign in the front window of the swanky store, which sold $3,700 smoking jackets, $580 suede loafers and $1,950 handbags, said “We are working on something special” — as employees boxed up the remaining clothes in the store, which included a salon, cafe and private club.
The salon remains open as another company took over the operation earlier.
Vacca’s landlord, Salim Assa, sued to evict him from the $4 million-a-year space for defaulting on his rent, while Vacca counter-sued in February, alleging that his landlord set an “outrageously high” rent simply to qualify for a $91 million commercial mortgage loan, according to court documents.
Vacca, whose fashions have been worn by such celebrities as Denzel Washington, Daniel Day-Lewis and Angela Bassett, could not be reached for comment.
