Deadly Memorial Day party shooting leaves at least 10 hurt

A man died early Sunday after at least 10 people were shot during a Memorial Day weekend block party in Virginia that turned into a bloodbath, officials say.

The 10 male gunshot victims were rushed to three local hospitals after Saturday night’s shooting in the Holly Cove neighborhood of Chesapeake, police confirmed to WTKR.

At least eight were transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s regional Level I trauma center where one of them died at about 2 a.m. Sunday, hospital spokesman Dale Gauding told The Virginian-Pilot.

He has not been identified and the condition of the others still being treated was not released.

Gauding said it was the most people he had seen brought into the hospital from a single incident in his 15 years at the hospital.

Police say no suspects have been identified and there is no known motive for one of the city’s most violent incidents in the past several years, according to the reports.

“I am shocked,” Mayor Rick West said Sunday. “The Cove has its share of crime like any other neighborhood, but I’m shocked — 10 people,”

Police had been monitoring the party at an apartment complex due to traffic congestion at the scene, and an apparent dispute between pedestrians and drivers, when gunfire began just before 10 p.m., Senior Police Officer Leo Kosinski told The Post.

Neighbor Greg Lamb, 56, told The Virginian-Pilot that the party had started in the late afternoon, with the group cooking and playing music before shots rang out.

“This is not the first time they had that event,” Lamb said.

“It’s just the first time something violent like that happened.”

Eye-witnesses had described a deadly fusillade of bullets.

“Man, I ducked my ass off,” one witness posted from the scene on Periscope.

“All I heard was shots fired, and people running towards me, man,” said the witness, broadcasting as “J. Fiesta, The Prophet.”

“Man, I just kept hearing gunshots, pop-pop-pop-pop-pop.”
