Corozal again Puerto Rican champions
Corozal, who participated in the FIVB Men’s World Club Championship last year, picked up their ninth national championship and second in a row
FIVB Men’s World Club Championship 2009 participants Corozal claimed their second consecutive title and ninth overall in the Puerto Rico Men’s Superior League by defeating Guaynabo in a five-set match 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 15-9) played in front of more than 5,000 spectators at Mario Morales Gymnasium.
Losers of the first two matches in the best-of-seven final series, the eventual champions went on to win the final four. Three of the six matches were extended to the five-set limit. Casey Patterson, selected the Most Valuable Player of the series, led Corozal with 23 points. Robert Nielsen and Matthew McKinney contributed 15 and 12 respectively and David Menendez added nine. “I am very happy,” said Patterson. “Corozal is a great team and we never gave up. We claimed the title and I feel extremely happy.”
“It was a very intense season but our team worked really hard to achieve this championship,” said coach David Aleman. “We made a great effort to revalidate the title and we succeeded.”
