Bryan Cranston’s Tony speech: ‘The media isn’t the enemy of the people’
Bryan Cranston’s “mad as hell” acceptance speech could have gone very wrong Sunday night at the 73rd annual Tony Awards ceremony.
As the actor took to the podium to accept his best actor trophy for his performance as TV newsman Howard Beale in “Network,” he cracked a joke: “Finally a straight old white man gets a break!,” followed by a misguided one-liner about the #MeToo movement.
Both comments were received with awkward laughter — but then the “Breaking Bad” star switched gears to deliver what appeared to be a down-low dig at President Donald Trump.

“I would like to dedicate this to all the real journalists around the world, both in the press, the print media and the broadcast media — who actually are in the line of fire with their pursuit of the truth,” said Cranston, 63, as his captive audience at Radio City Music Hall roared with approval.
“The media is not the enemy of the people — demagoguery is the enemy of the people,” he added with a wave to the crowd. “Thank you very much, good night.”
Cranston didn’t actually drop the president’s name during the CBS broadcast — but Trump has invoked the phrase “enemy of the people” when expressing his frustrations with CNN and the New York Times’ coverage of his administration.
