Billionaire’s $279M ranch comes with car museum, dinosaur fossil

When a mansion hits the market, you might find high-end amenities such as an infinity pool, a home theater and a guest house.

But to sweeten the deal of his Gateway, Colo., ranch for sale, John Hendricks — the billionaire founder of the Discovery Channel — threw in something a bit more over the top: an entire car museum.

Hendricks has re-listed his massive Southwest-style abode, dubbed West Creek Ranch, after failing to secure a buyer in 2017.

This time, instead of just marketing the eight-bedroom, eight-bath main house — which sprawls over 22,000 square feet — and its grounds, he’s also included the nearby Gateway Canyons Resort and Spa, which comes with a 72-room lodge, a dining area and an auto museum.

Previously listed separately, Hendricks now wants $279 million ($130 million more than the ranch’s previous ask) for both properties combined — which span whopping 8,700 acres.

If you were hoping to score a classic car with the deal, think again. Only two of the 50 cars featured in the Gateway Auto Museum — 1929 Duesenberg and a 1906 Cadillac — will go to some lucky buyer.

But the new owner will get some other one-of-a-kind features.

Along with an airstrip, an airplane hangar, a helipad and horse stables, the ranch also includes a private observatory with a telescope and a prehistoric dinosaur footprint.

The listing describes the footprint, plus some ancient Native American carvings, as “a collection of some of the most enduring and treasured natural geological wonders in the canyonlands of the American West.”

That’s all in addition to the four-level main house, which boasts an elevator, a great room, a formal dining room, a chef’s kitchen, a breakfast room, a movie theater, an art studio, staff quarters, a billiards room, a gym, a two-level stone library and 3,500 square feet of backyard space filled with verandas, a pool, a spa and four fountains.

Take a tour of West Creek Ranch, the 20,000-square-foot mansion that Discovery Channel billionaire John Hendricks is trying to sell.

There’s also a two-bedroom guest house on the property with its own garage as well as another “five-plus-car garage.” Oh, and all the furniture is included.

Even given all those extras, it’s the scenic open space that Hendricks considers the property’s greatest asset.

“West Creek Ranch is a place where the earth really opens up to tell its story,” Hendricks said in a press release announcing the original listing. “When you look up at the walls of the canyons, it’s all these layers of earth that go back 300 million years.”
