In what is expected to be his final fight in the UFC, Anderson Silva was defeated by Uriah Hall via fourth round TKO Saturday in Las Vegas, NV.

After a solid effort in the first half of the fight, Silva got sloppy and walked into a Hall right hand at the end of the third round that dropped him. The 36-year-old Hall landed some ground and pound, but the round ended early, perhaps saving Silva from imminent defeat. In the fourth, Silva made the same mistake and Hall made him pay for it, dropping him after another right hook and landing some strikes while standing for the stoppage at 1:28 of the round.

Both men embraced and paid respect to each other post-fight with both getting very emotional in the cage. 

The no. 10 ranked Hall (16-9) has now won three straight and four of his last five.

Going into this week, this was believed to be the 45-year-old Silva’s final fight ever until he mentioned in an interview with Ariel Helwani that this simply might be his final UFC fight. There is some question about whether he has one remaining fight on his UFC deal. but that is yet to be determined. Even in his post-fight interview, he didn’t say it was his last fight, saying he would go talk to his family and “we’ll see.”

In the post-event press conference, an agitated Dana White said he didn’t feel good about letting Silva fight Saturday and that Hall didn’t have any output, “one of the most gun-shy fighters in the UFC.” White said he made a big mistake and shouldn’t have let him fight, adding he should never fight again.

White said Silva has one fight left with the UFC, but that he will never fight again in the Octagon. 

If this is Silva’s last Octagon appearance, he leaves behind an incredible legacy as one of the most dominant and popular champions in the boom era of the sport. A former UFC middleweight champion, he holds records for consecutive victories (16) and longest title reign in days (2457). He also fought four times at light heavyweight with T/KO wins over former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, James Irvin, and Stephan Bonnar with the one blemish a last second fill-in appearance against Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.

Silva fought 25 times in the UFC, starting in June 2008 with a 49 second knockout of Chris Leben. He won the middleweight title one fight later with a three minute knockout of Rich Franklin, a reign that continued through July 2013 when Chris Weidman stunned the MMA world with a knockout win after Silva was clowning around.

That began a decline, one that followed in a rematch with Weidman that resulted in one of the most gruesome leg injuries ever in the UFC. After such dominance in his early UFC run, he won just one time (a controversial decision over Derek Brunson) with seven losses and one no contest in his last nine fights.
