After violence was witnessed all over Mumbai on Wednesday, the Maratha Kranti Morcha, that led the quota stir, called for a Mumbai bandh but withdrew the call afternoon. On Wednesday morning several incidents of violence in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas were reported. A shutdown was called later in the day remains in effect in Thane and Navi Mumbai.

The strike took place due to community demanding reservation in jobs and education. Protesters blocked major arterial roads in the city including the Eastern Expressway and forced shops to shut as well. Local train routes were blocked in Jogeshwari and near Thane. Violent protests erupted in parts of the state on Tuesday after a protester committed suicide by jumping into a river in Aurangabad.
