Fans Outraged, Chant “AEW” After Hell in a Cell Match Ends in Referee Stoppage
The WWE Universe is NOT happy with their WWE Universal Champion.
Seth Rollins faced the demonic alter ego of Bray Wyatt known as The Fiend this Sunday night in Sacramento, in the main event of WWE’s annual Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, and while it reached a level of violence not seen in a WWE ring in a very long time, things quickly took a turn for the worse in the show’s closing moments.
Throughout the match Rollins exhausted every possible option at his disposal – a Pedigree, a ladder, a top rope splash through a table, a steel chair shot to the head, and about a dozen Curb Stomps – and every single time The Fiend kicked out with astonishing ease.
In the end, Rollins retrieved a sledgehammer from underneath the ring and bashed in The Fiend’s skull, much to the fervent protests of the referee, who then immediately ended the match and called for the Cell to be raised. The official ruling was a “referee stoppage”.
Fans at the Golden 1 Center were understandably upset by the decision, given that the Hell in a Cell structure was originally created as the ultimate “anything goes” environment to end a bloody rivalry. We have seen bodies thrown off the top of the cage, and yes, numerous sledgehammers used in the past, but apparently that no longer matters.
Chants of “restart the match” and “AEW” were clearly heard around the arena as the live broadcast went off the air, and fans continued to chant and boo loudly for several minutes afterwards as they quickly exited the building.
The Fiend was put on a stretcher after the match and helped by medics, only to rise from unconsciousness as if nothing had happened, once again attacking Rollins with the Mandible Claw until massive amounts of blood spewed from his mouth.
At least for now, Seth Rollins is still Universal Champion.
