Joseph Currier looks at Rey Mysterio’s current WWE run and the value he could still have to the company. Plus, Vinny’s TV reviews.
After three years away from the company, Mysterio made his full-time return to WWE last fall. His current run hasn’t been a failure, but this is the time when he’s freshest to WWE and the fans. That hasn’t really been capitalized on.
Mysterio won the US title from Samoa Joe at Money in the Bank, but his reign never got a chance to begin. He had to vacate the title after separating his shoulder. Wherever WWE was going with Mysterio’s son Dominick being by his side against Joe, that’s seemingly been dropped. When Mysterio returned, he was demolished by Bobby Lashley in his first match back.
Mysterio also participated in a number one contender’s battle royal last month, with Rollins winning and advancing to challenge Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Mysterio defeated Zayn at Raw Reunion, though the segment was mostly about returning legends getting to appear. RVD, Sgt. Slaughter, The Hurricane, and Kurt Angle stopped Zayn from walking out. Mysterio then hit the 619 and a frog splash to get the win.
Raw Reunion capitalized on the nostalgia of returning wrestlers from previous eras. Mysterio appearing on the same episode as them showed how much of an opportunity WWE is missing with him. Even at 44 years old, Mysterio is such an incredible in-ring performer. He can still be one of the most marketable people on the roster and one of the wrestlers with the most mainstream appeal. He can still connect as a top babyface. He’s a Hall of Fame wrestler that still has a ton of value to the company. WWE moved on from John Cena too quickly when he should have had time left as a top star, and they shouldn’t make the same mistake with Mysterio.

A steel cage with weapons is suspended above the ring and tarped off at TakeOver: Toronto tonight. It will be the stipulation for the third fall of Adam Cole and Johnny Gargano’s NXT Championship match.
WWE filmed a segment where R-Truth retained the 24/7 title against Drake Maverick and Titus O’Neil at his SummerSlam meet and greet.
Knox County communications director Rob Link noted that Glenn Jacobs (Kane) isn’t scheduled for any upcoming WWE appearances. WWE has advertised Kane for house shows in Bossier City and Lafayette, Louisiana on August 23 and 24.
Paige wrote that she’ll need to undergo one more surgery on her neck: “Not the best pic of me but had another consultation with my fave doctor in the world! @thejuanuribe checking up on my neck. Unfortunately I have the neck of a 60 year old. The first fusion healed perfectly. But I developed another hernia above it after my match in Uniondale. It didn’t get better over time.. One more surgery.” Paige also tweeted that she isn’t going anywhere: “I’ll be back supporting my girls in no time not going anywhere!”
Squared Circle Sirens reported that Kavita Devi will undergo surgery for a torn left ACL on August 15.

I would of loved to compete against all 3 but my time is over. My hair is Dandy though!”

Kota Ibushi defeated Kazuchika Okada this morning to advance to the finals of the G1 Climax. The winner of the B Block will be decided at tomorrow morning’s show, which begins at 5 a.m. Eastern time. Tetsuya Naito vs. Jay White is the main event, and Hirooki Goto vs. Shingo Takagi, Jon Moxley vs. Juice Robinson, Tomohiro Ishii vs. Taichi, and Toru Yano vs. Jeff Cobb are the other tournament matches. Goto, Moxley, Naito, and White all have 10 points and are still in the running, while Ishii and Yano are still barely in contention at eight points. The G1 finals will take place at 2 a.m. Eastern time on Monday morning.
NJPW held a memorial ceremony for Harley Race prior to today’s G1 show.
Rush confronted Matt Taven at Summer Supercard last night and was indicated as the next challenger for Taven’s ROH World Championship. Taven retained against Alex Shelley at Summer Supercard, while Rush defeated Dalton Castle in a no DQ match.
AEW posted video of Matt Jackson announcing The Young Bucks vs. Private Party for AEW’s second TV episode on October 9. It will be a first round match in their Tag Team title tournament. They also uploaded Hangman Page’s appearance at House of Glory’s High Intensity 8 last night and the promo he cut about his All Out match against Chris Jericho.
Marty Scurll will make a pre-show appearance at House of Glory’s Chapter 4 show in Queens, New York on October 5.

The California State Athletic Commission has suspended Aspen Ladd’s bantamweight license. Ladd will need to show “extensive medical documentation” that she can fight safely at that weight.
Dana White wants to partner with FX again for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.
