Sable Gibson, 10, of Mason, Ohio died this week after being diagnosed with both strep throat and the flu.

Gibson was diagnosed on Tuesday morning. Later that day, she went into cardiac arrest. She was then airlifted to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center but died shortly after, PEOPLE confirms.

The little girl was in fourth grade at Western Row Elementary School in Mason and was the youngest of six siblings. Her family told WLWT Channel 5 that she loved to play basketball and do arts and crafts.

“She was their light,” Lora Cartmell, Gibson’s aunt who spoke on behalf of the family, told PEOPLE on Friday. “They called her ‘Little Sister.’ She was like the caboose of their family, she completed it.”

“She was just a sincere, thoughtful 10-year-old,” Cartmell said. “An old soul.”

On Facebook, Gibson’s mother wrote, “Our hearts are completely broken… For now, we are trying to live out what we say believe, and stand on the hope of life and peace that we have in Jesus. Please, please, please pray for our family in this dark time. We can’t imagine our lives without our baby girl.”

WLWT reported that students and staff at Gibson’s school wore pink on Thursday to honor her memory, as pink was her favorite color.

“Her friends loved her,” Cartmell said of her relationship with the other students, adding, “she always had an extra bag of chips in her lunch box because there were some kids who didn’t have them.”

In their weekly surveillance reports last updated on Feb. 16, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 41 flu-related pediatric deaths have been reported to the CDC during the 2018-2019 flu season.
