Greenwich Looks To Establish New Dog Park
GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich’s four-legged furry friends could soon have a new spot in town to play in thanks to a public/private partnership with a beloved local family business.
During Thursday’s regularly scheduled board of selectmen meeting, First Selectman Fred Camillo said Greenwich is looking to open a second dog park, this time on the western side of town in Glenville.
Greenwich’s only official space for dogs is located in central Greenwich at Grass Island. It opened in 2005 after several years of planning. Camillo, a noted dog lover, was involved in the creation of the park beginning in 2000.

To that end, Camillo reached out to Adam Jacobson from Pet Pantry Warehouse and secured a pledge from the business to establish a dog park right above the Western Greenwich Civic Center.
Pet Pantry agreed to donate $30,000 for the space, and will have naming rights for a term of 10 years, per the agreement. A sign denoting the “Pet Pantry Community Dog Park” will be affixed in the area.

Camillo said the space is fenced-in on three sides with chainlink, and it will have to be fully enclosed.
Other improvements will be made to ensure safety, such as having a divider to separate large dogs from smaller dogs. There will also be a water source and improved landscaping.
Parking is available on the side of the road, and at Western Greenwich Civic Center. Camillo also said a lot of residents in the neighborhood already walk over and use the area for their dogs.
The board expressed excitement and support for the project, but no action was taken in order to allow two weeks for public feedback. Camillo said that when he took office, he aspired to open two new dog parks. Another location is being looked at on the Eastern side of Greenwich.

Pet Pantry Warehouse is an independent, family owned retailer founded in 1945 in Greenwich. The business offers food, treats, supplies and toys for a variety of pets.
There are now Pet Pantry locations in Riverside, Fairfield, New Canaan, Wilton, and in Westchester County towns of Larchmont, Rye and Scarsdale, N.Y.
Camillo, who has championed public/private partnerships as a means to get projects done in town, thanked Jacobson for Pet Pantry’s generosity.
“We appreciate this and all that your family has done,” he said.
Jacobson spoke briefly and said he’s “grateful” to give back to the Greenwich community.
“I think by partnering with the town of Greenwich to bring about a new dog park in Glenville, this truy serves to further our appreciation to the town and a thank you to all of our longstanding Greenwich customers who have continually supported our business for 78 years,” Jacobson said. “I know our family and our company as a whole is delighted to be able to contribute to the town.”
More details on parking, access to the dog park and the specific address for the park will be posted in the coming days, Camillo said.
The gift of $30,000 will have to be ultimately approved by the Representative Town Meeting.
