A family in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh has claimed that the roof of their house has been damaged after what they believe is a meteorite fell from the sky.

Sunil Gupta, a resident of Inayat Ganj in Pilibhit claimed that the meteorite fell on Monday night, resulting in damages to the iron net and a wall near it.

Heavy, hot, rock-like object from sky

According to Gupta, there was a loud noise when the object fell on the roof and the damage was spotted during the examination the next morning.

To the shock of the family, they also found a large stone-like object lying on the roof, which they claim was still hot when they saw it.

According to local media reports, the unidentified object weighs around 14kgs.

While it is yet to be ascertained if the unidentified object is a meteorite, experts have pointed out that such incidents are not uncommon.

Suspected meteorite death in India

In February 2016, there was a massive uproar in India after a man was killed in Tamil Nadu by an object falling from the sky.

Kamaraj, a bus driver was killed after an explosion caused by an object that fell from the sky into the campus of an engineering college in the city of Vellore.

The explosion left a crater on the ground, blew out the window panes of nearby buildings, and the windshields of parked buses, shattered a water tank, and sent debris flying. The victim was standing near the site of impact and was killed.

While initially it was reported that the explosion was caused by a falling meteorite, scientists from NASA said that the photographs posted online were more consistent with “a land-based explosion” than with something from space.
