Hero unclogs sewer to help clear flooding on Queens highway

One woman in Queens took action Monday night to help alleviate severe flooding that closed all lanes on the Long Island Expressway near Francis Lewis Boulevard.

Daphne Youree exited her car and grabbed an orange construction cone and began clearing debris that was clogging a sewer grate under an overpass on the flooded highway.
The good Samaritan posted a video of her efforts to Twitter with the caption “Guess what. I cleared it !” in response to a flooding notification from the city’s emergency management department.
In the same Twitter thread, Youree explained her actions, writing, “I was right up front one of the first cars to stop! I figured why not clear drains if possible. It was CRAZY.”
The woman’s efforts drew kudos from City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who tweeted, “Thanks Daphne for being a Good Samaritan and great New Yorker!”
Youree was happy to play traffic control, tweeting: “I’m psyched for my new job!!!”
The road was flooded from a round a heavy thunderstorms that wreaked havoc on the city Monday night.
