Theory of stowaway hijacker may explain the mystery of MH370

A stowaway hijacker intentionally plunging Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 into the ocean is one possible scenario that some aviation experts say may have doomed the plane that became modern aviation’s biggest mystery.

MH370 disappeared shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on March 8, 2014, heading to Beijing, China, with 239 people on board. Some debris from the ill-fated airliner has been found on beaches in Madagascar and eastern Africa, but the majority of the plane’s wreckage was never found despite a massive international search.

Aviation security expert Tim Termini suggested there are four hijacking possibilities: that a crew member took over the plane; that a passenger was a hijacker; or a stowaway or a ground-based electrical takeover was responsible.

The theory is not widely supported. The most common conclusion for the MH370 mystery is a belief that the captain of the flight, 53-year-old Zaharie Ahmad Shah, was troubled and depressed and deliberately flew the plane into the ocean.

Philip Baum, of the academic journal Aviation Security International, said officials don’t want to contemplate the possibility of a stowaway.

“I think a stowaway is a strong possibility,” he said.
