Irving will meet with the Nets on Sunday, and when free agency tips off at 6 p.m., they will look to hammer out a four-year, $141 million maximum deal. The Post reported mutual interest for months and confirmed an ESPN report about their meeting and motivation to quickly reach an agreement.
The 27-year-old Irving grew up in West Orange, N.J., attending Nets games and looking up to Jason Kidd. They can only hope his acquisition — replacing D’Angelo Russell — goes as well as Kidd supplanting Stephon Marbury.
Irving tops Jeremy Lin as their priciest free-agent signing and Deron Williams as their highest-paid player. When he reaches his new deal, the Nets could renounce Russell, who is a restricted free agent. But ESPN reported the Nets would work with the 23-year-old All-Star on sign-and-trade scenarios to get him to a team of his preference.
Despite a rocky season in Boston, Irving was second-team All-NBA. He had drawn interest from both the Knicks and Lakers (for a reunion with LeBron James), but is not expected to grant either a visit. Now the Nets’ grand plan is to have him help recruit Kevin Durant.
