The ex-Met has only been on the Phillies for a week, but has turned that into National League Player of the Week. In six games, Bruce hit .381 with four home runs and 11 RBIs, recording a 1.429 OPS. The Phillies went 4-2 in those games against the Padres and Reds, and sit atop the NL East at 37-28.
The Mets included Bruce, who was traded for the third time in two and a half years, in the blockbuster deal that brought in Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano from the Mariners. Cano, who has been hobbled by an injured quad, has three home runs and 14 RBIs in 46 games this season, good for a .650 OPS.
Bruce only lasted a few months in Seattle, as the last-place Mariners traded the veteran outfielder to the NL East-leading Phillies las week.
“I get to go somewhere I have a chance to win,” Bruce said at the time. “At this point in my career, that’s pretty paramount for me.”
The deal will cost the Phillies just $2.75 million over the next season and a half, as the Mariners agreed to pay $18,567,204 million of the $21,317,204 million remaining on the deal Bruce originally signed with the Mets. The Mets are still on the hook for the second $1.5 million installment of his $3 million signing bonus.
The Mets will get to see their former slugger when they travel to Philadelphia on June 24th.
