Just hours before opening fire, Virginia Beach gunman DeWayne Craddock sent an innocuous-sounding resignation letter to his superiors saying he had to leave for “personal reasons” but it bad “been a pleasure to serve the City,” officials revealed.

“I want to officially put in my (2) weeks’ notice to vacant (sic) my position of Engineer III with the City of Virginia Beach,” Craddock wrote on May 31, per the email released Monday titled “DeWayne’s (2) Week Notice.”

“It has been a pleasure to serve the City, but due to personal reasons I must relieve my position.”

A colleague from the public utilities division later replied, “DeWayne, I hope you are able to resolve your personal reasons. To be clear, your last work day will be Friday, June 14, 2019.”

Craddock then answered: “Thank you. Yes, that is correct.”

The exact time stamps on the emails were redacted, but it came the same day Craddock opened fire on the second floor of the city’s municipal building just after 4 pm., killing 12 city workers.

He was later captured alive following a gun battle with cops, but died from his injuries at the hospital.
