Ariel Winter is showing her true self.

Days after shutting down rumors that she had plastic surgery and slamming people for thin shaming her, the Modern Family star went unretouched for the Winter 2019 cover of Pulse Spikes magazine.

Winter, 21, said that she was nervous for the shoot, but proud of the photos.

“It was definitely more of a difficult process for me, not because I have to be in makeup daily, I don’t, I’m not looking red carpet standard all the time. It is just something you think about like, ‘Oh, well I am going to be photographed in this setting. Oh no, what if I look weird? I got a pimple today!’ But it was nice to be able to do that,” she told the magazine.

Winter is constantly deflecting criticism over how she looks and dresses on social media, but she said that it doesn’t get to her anymore.

“When I was 14 to 16, in high school, I cared about what people thought about me,” she said. “And not what my classmates were saying but more what was on the internet, since there were a lot more people who said things directly. In school, it was more like whispers that maybe I heard or maybe I didn’t. I tried to change a few of those things. Nobody thought anything better of me, the criticism didn’t stop, nobody was ever going to be happy with the way I looked. So I realized that it didn’t matter … the only person that matters is me because I am the only one who has to live with me.”

Plus, Winter said, her critics are just anonymous people on the internet.

“These people don’t know me; they know what they see on the internet,” she said. “You can’t change the way you look in a major way. You are who you are, and there is no problem with that. We are always harder on ourselves than we need to be … Why live hating yourself when there is no real reason to?”

Winter said that we should be celebrating our differences rather than trying to all look the same.

“If we were all supposed to look a certain way then we would have probably evolved that way. We are all different, and that is the way it is,” she said. “… There is nothing better than looking like yourself and being unique. Nobody wants to be the same; the same is boring. We all have our different strengths, and so much makes up a person.”

On Monday, after celebrating her 21st birthday the night before, Winter was forced to defend herself after people commented on Instagram that she “lost” her butt and was “chopping up her body.”

Winter responded to one of the comments, which criticized her while claiming to help other girls feel confident.

“I appreciate you wanting to help girls love themselves the way they are, but you are also kind of cutting someone (me) down which isn’t what I think you were trying to do?” she wrote back. “I also didn’t get plastic surgery. That is also not supportive of women if you’re just assuming about the way they look.”
